New details emerge in New Year’s Day shooting that killed Amarillo 15‑year‑old
AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Two 17-year-olds are facing serious charges after a 15-year-old girl was killed in a shooting in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day in Amarillo.
Jeremiah Luke Lajuan Matthews has been charged with manslaughter in the death of Brynnlee Hampton.
Landrey Korde Matthews has been charged with tampering with evidence.

Court documents reveal new details about what happened inside a vehicle carrying eight juveniles leaving a party.
Officers responded to a shooting at 6001 Westwind Avenue in Amarillo just after midnight on January 1, 2026.
Hampton, a front passenger in the vehicle, had been shot and was rushed to Northwest Texas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to an affidavit, multiple juvenile witnesses told police that Jeremiah Matthews was playing with a firearm inside the vehicle. Witnesses said he waved the gun around and pointed it in other passengers’ faces.
The juvenile driver told investigators she heard what sounded like a firework.
One of the front seat passengers then told her she believed she had been shot. The driver pulled over and realized Hampton had been shot.
Inside the vehicle, officers found a single bullet hole in the rear of the front passenger seat and blood on the front passenger seat.
Jeremiah Matthews is charged with manslaughter for recklessly causing Hampton’s death by shooting her with a firearm. His bond has been set at $500,000.
Landrey Korde Matthews is accused of taking the firearm from Jeremiah Matthews after the shooting and throwing it down the street in an attempt to conceal evidence.
A firearm was later recovered down the street from where the shooting occurred. Landrey Matthews’ bond has been set at $250,000.
A GoFundMe has been created by the family to help with funeral expenses and to honor her memory.
Tascosa Volleyball wrote on Facebook, “Our hearts are broken. Our volleyball family is mourning the tragic loss of one of our own. Brynnlee was a light on and off the court. We hold her family, friends and teammates in our thoughts and prayers as we mourn together and honor her memory.”
