Stinky Fire in Potter County is 100% contained

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Crews have contained one of the last active fires in the Panhandle nearly a week after they first broke out.

Amarillo Landfill ‘Stinky’ Fire

The Stinky Fire at the Amarillo Landfill spread to the outlying area due to high winds on Monday.

As of Thursday evening, the fire burned 2,335 acres and is 100% contained.

Over 300 homes were threatened and 77 were destroyed, damaged or impacted.

As of Wednesday afternoon, all mandatory evacuations were lifted.

Hungate Fire in Randall County

The Hungate Fire in Randall County is now 100% contained.

The fire merged with Chocolate Chip and burned an estimated 34,131 acres.

The Texas A&M Forest Service conducted a damage assessment and found the following:

  • 7 occupied homes were lost
  • 3 unoccupied homes were lost
  • 3 homes sustained minor damage
  • 13 outbuildings were lost, 5 with major damage and one with minor damage.

Officials say 600 homes were saved during the fire.

Western Fire in Randall County

The Texas A&M Forest Service has confirmed that the Western Fire in Randall County was started by someone welding during the afternoon.

As of May 16, the fire was fully contained. It burned an estimated 1,137 acres.

  • Roman Fire - Hartley County - 6,294 acres
  • Western Fire - Randall County- 1,137 acres
  • Cherokee Fire - Briscoe County - 3,222 acres
  • Chainey Mountain Fire - Hall County - 1,201 acres
  • Ox Bow Fire - Hall County - 1,000 acres
  • Hall County fire off US 287 and County Road CC
  • Lipscomb County fire near Highways 82 and 23
  • Kress Fire - Swisher County - 1,551 acres - The Tulia Fire Department says the fire was started by a trailer that caught fire on I-27.
  • Hungate Fire - Randall County - 34,131 acres
  • Mimms Fire in Quay County - The New Mexico Forestry Service says the fire burned 7,093 acres. The final update was 40% contained.
