AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - An arrest warrant reveals a mother charged with leaving her 3-year-old son with her boyfriend the day of his brutal beating knew about prior abuse.

Dawson has been in the hospital and on life support since October 14.

The arrest warrant for Berg says Alexander brought Dawson to Medical City McKinney and told hospital staff he heard a “thud” and found him with serious injuries.

Hospital staff notified police when they suspected that his injuries were inconsistent with a single fall. Dawson’s injuries include severe brain trauma, bruising in various states of healing over his entire body and more.

When Berg saw photos of his injuries, she was adamant he did not have those injuries when she left for work and left him in Alexander’s care.

A search of Berg and Alexander’s cellphones show numerous messages between her and Alexander discussing Dawson’s injuries over a month prior to October 14.

On September 9, Berg sent this message: “He clearly his his head when he fell, he has a bruise on his eyebrow and his whole jawline/cheek is bruised. You’re reckless. He had progressively been getting more and more hurt with you!!! Leave me alone!!! I’m not blind. You’re DANGEROUS.”

Another message sent September 18 reads: “100000% serious. You bruise him, hurt him, and cause damage every single time you are alone with him. There hasn’t been a single time you’ve been alone with him where he hasn’t been hurt.”

In the messages, Berg also tells Alexander that she overlooked bruising on the child’s genitals “knowing it could have happened at school” and that the child had been staying home to recover from injuries.

She is charged with injury to a child by omission, a first-degree felony. In Texas, a first-degree felony conviction can lead to a prison sentence ranging from five years to life.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with medical bills and legal representation.
