Teen accused in July 4th attack indicted on terrorism, explosives, and murder charges
CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - An 18-year-old accused of planning a Fourth of July attack in Canyon was indicted on multiple charges.
According to Randall County District Attorney Robert Love, Kevin Alexander Hunt faces charges of terrorism, attempt to commit capital murder of multiple persons, and possession of components of explosives.
Love outlined the potential penalties for each charge.
- Terrorism: First-degree felony, punishable by 15 years to life in prison.
- Attempted capital murder of multiple persons: First-degree felony, punishable by 5 to 99 years or life in prison.
- Possession of components of explosives: Third-degree felony, punishable by 2 to 10 years in prison.
Hunt was arrested in July after investigators found materials used to make explosives, including hydrogen peroxide and much more.
Court documents allege he intended to combine the materials to commit a violent crime.
As of October 1, Hunt was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
“His attorney at the federal level has filed motions to have him examined psychologically both for his current competency level, and I believe they are going to ask about his sanity at the time of the alleged offenses,” said Love. “We’ll just wait and see how that comes out.”
Love says it could be around 18 months or longer before Hunt’s case goes to trial. He added that federal cases usually move faster, but since Hunt was just indicted, the process is still in its early stages.
The District Attorney said that prosecutors do have evidence of Hunt’s alleged intent but cannot release details at this time because it could interfere with the jury’s decision.
Hunt’s $1.5 million bond was denied at the federal level.
Federal prosecutors filed a motion that will prevent Hunt from being released until his case is resolved.
