AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The City of Amarillo’s Office of Emergency Management partnered with Randall County to install four new outdoor warning sirens.

“Randall County is getting four brand new sirens. So as the counties grow and more population comes to the great county that is Randall, we want to ensure our citizens are in the know of those dangers that they have and as much as we can to notify them as early as we can,” said Max Dunlap, director or emergency management, City of Amarillo.

They are meant to be a warning system for those who are outside during severe weather.

“These, today, are primarily designed for outside use. You may not hear one inside so you should have another source, the KFDA app, you should have a NOAA weather radio, all of those things,” said Kevin Selle, first alert meteorologist, NewsChannel10. “But if you’re out and about, you’re cutting the lawn, you’re at the park, anything like that, that’s when the sirens are really really critical.”

The sirens will be installed due to the expansion of Randall County and wanting to ensure all the citizens are safe during extreme weather.

“These sirens are quite literally one of the larger tools that we have on our toolbelt to ensure that we can notify our citizens of any impending dangers. We want to make sure that they work properly, they work well and they work when we need them,” said Dunlap.

The cost of these new sirens will be over $180,000 that Randall County will fully reimburse to the City of Amarillo.
