POTTER COUNTY, Texas (KFDA) - The Potter County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to use caution near the Canadian River following heavy rainfall in the area.

Recent rainfall caused higher water levels and extensive flooding at the river, leading to some areas becoming unstable or unsafe.

The sheriff’s office says their ability to conduct rescue operations in the Canadian River area is limited due to available equipment and the elevated river conditions.

The National Park Service has also closed the Rosita Flats portion of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area until futher notice.

The sheriff’s office asks the public to avoid entering flooded areas, respect closures and posted warnings, and avoid trying to cross flooded roads, trails and waterways.

Potter County officials say they will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates.

“Please make the safe decision. Stay out of the water and allow emergency personnel to remain focused on those who truly need assistance,” according to a statement by the Potter County Sheriff’s Office.

If you run into an emergency, call 911.
