AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - An Amarillo musician is taking his Texas roots to a national stage after earning a golden ticket on American Idol.

26-year-old Cameron James Smith says this opportunity traces back to his upbringing in Amarillo.

Smith grew up in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School.

He was raised in church, where his grandfather served as pastor, surrounded by the sound of gospel music.

Smith also grew up listening to 80s music with his parents before eventually gravitating toward country when he began writing and recording music.

“This community shaped everything about me,” said Smith. “It shaped the music that I like. It shaped who I am.”

Last year, Smith traveled to Nashville to audition for American Idol, performing “Faithfully” by Journey and an original song titled “Knew Me When.”

Standing in front of judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan, Smith says the moment was surreal.

Out of more than 100,000 contestants who audition, only 127 advance to Hollywood Week.

Smith received two out of three yeses from the judges — enough to earn a golden ticket.

The judges offered both encouragement and honest criticism.

Carrie Underwood told Smith he’s a good songwriter and he’s good at connecting with the audience.

No matter what, win or lose, Smith has full trust in God to lead him in the right path. He says, “Psalm 32:8 is one of his favorite verses and has it on both of his guitar straps.”

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” -Psalm 32:8

Smith says that this experience was eye-opening and is grateful for the friendships he formed.

“It gave me a lot of humility to realize there are incredibly talented people from all corners of the world,” said Smith. “I just need to be grateful for every stage that I’m on.”
