CLINTON COUNTY, Mich. (WILX/Gray News) - A pregnant mom of four in Michigan smashed into a family, killing two and injuring 14 others as they were walking to their grandparents’ house, according to authorities.

The crash happened on May 18 just before 6:30 p.m., deputies said.

WILX reported that a group of people were walking on the shoulder of the roadway on their way to their grandparents’ house when they were hit by a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Ashley Marie Monroe.

Officials said 30-year-old Johnathan Esch and 42-year-old Daniel Harris died at the scene.

Police said Monroe left the scene of the crash before being arrested shortly after.

Authorities believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

During a court hearing, the prosecuting team said police found “a mostly empty” pint of Crown Royal in her purse, along with two bottles of her anti-depressants in her car. The lawyer also said Monroe blew a .183 in a breathalyzer when she was taken to jail, over twice the legal limit, WILX reported.

Monroe’s bond is set at $1 million.

She was charged with the following:

  • Two counts of Operating Under the Influence Causing Death
  • Two counts of Failing to Stop at Scene When at Fault Resulting in Death
  • Six counts of Operating Under the Influence Causing Incapacitating Injury
  • One count of Failure to Stop at Scene of Accident Resulting in Serious Impairment or Death
