G.O.A.T. of the Week: Briley Waters
WELLINGTON, Texas (KFDA) - The Wellington Lady Skyrockets made school history this season.
For the first time ever, the girls basketball team made it all the way to San Antonio for the state tournament.
Briley Waters helped lead the team as one of the best rebounders and go-to scoring options.
In the big games, she was constantly the one stepping up. The star senior finished as the leading scorer in the big district title game against Clarendon with 14 points and posted an incredible 21-point performance in the regional final against Farwell.
“I think Wellington has always been counted out on the big stage.” Waters said when asked about what her and her team have accomplished this season. “This year for us to come out and just play that good in the regional tournament and then be able to get here for the first time, it’s overwhelming. You also have a sense of pride for it just because you make your town proud.”
Waters and her teammates fought through numerous close battles, including one of the best playoff games of the year against the Panhandle Pantherettes in the area round. Ultimately, they continued to step up when needed and proved themselves as one of the best teams in the state.
“It’s just a testament to the approach our girls have everyday in practice.” Wellington Lady Skyrockets head coach Cade Brown said. “I think that’s what made them ready for the big stage and the big moment.”
“It’s not the ending we wanted, but I’m still really proud of our team.” Waters said once Wellington’s playoff run came to an end. “We came out and we fought, and we just fell a little short.”
The Lady Skyrockets may have not had a state title, but they can hold their heads high knowing they have cemented themselves as one of the best teams ever to come through Wellington.
