Deadline to file taxes days away

Many people are scrambling to file their federal income taxes this year because new changes are making the process a little more complicated.

April 15th is the last day to file your taxes or to file for a 6-month extension.

This is the first year for the IRS to administer the premium tax credits and individual mandates under the Affordable Care Act.

A local certified public accountant, Mickey Pride, says these changes are a tough adjustment.

"It has been tough for everyone to try and get use to. Since it is new, no one knows what to bring and so it had just been a little bit challenging" says Pride.

Those who did not have health insurance last year for more than 90 days will have to pay a penalty of 95 dollars or 1 percent of their income.

Pride says with all of the new changes this year, he has seen more people filing for the extension.

"Make sure even if you owe money to go ahead and file for the extension. That will prevent you from additional penalties. So if you have not got your information ready or you lack something, go ahead and make sure you file for the extension." says Pride.

While a lot of people were anticipating delayed refunds, pride says so far they have actually been prompt.

"They seem to be coming along well. That was a concern at the start because we heard it would take some time to get the refunds, but they have been fairly prompt this year. They have been good about getting those back in a timely manner" says Pride.
