Water Wasters is Working!!!

We aren't at mandatory water restrictions yet, but on Monday, Amarillo used twenty million more gallons than we've been averaging per day the past few weeks. This puts us that much closer to a severe water problem. Newschannel 10's Kristen Guilfoos is on assignment for this week's Water Wasters.

Our first Water Waster... Humphrey Highlands Elementary School... where there are puddles of water all over the parking lot. I spoke with AISD earlier today and they tell me they're not sure where the water is coming from, but they're looking into it and this road should be dry very soon. Humphrey Highlands isn't the only AISD property on our water wasters list for today. A viewer called the station earlier today and said there were sprinklers in front of the AISD building itself that were shooting into the air. She said she actually got wet through her sunroof as she drove by. AISD says a car ran over the sprinkler head this weekend and it will be taken care of first thing tomorrow. We're starting something new in this week's water wasters.

Each week, starting tonight, we'll give you a tip on how to save water at home. This week's tip... How to make your toilet more efficient. If you put food coloring into the toilet tank, and colored water comes out in the bowl, without flushing, you have a leak. If you do have a leak, you could be wasting as much as 600 gallons of water a month. Join us next Tuesday for another Water Wasters segment and more on how you can save water at home.
