CHILDRESS, TX (KFDA) - For the Childress Bobcats, this season is all about winning the day.
"That's our mindset that we've always had. What we always say in our program is 1-0 and that's what we want to be 1-0 everyday.", said head coach Jason Sims. "We want to win that day, we want to win that rep, and we're not worried about what happened yesterday. We're not worried about what happened last season, we're going to focus on today. We're not going to worry about teams on our schedule right now. We're just coming out here working to get better."
Winning has been a part of the Childress tradition for years and whats understood doesn't have to be explained.
"You don't have to stress that in Childress, they know it. Everybody knows the type of tradition Childress has had. I played football here with Coach Charlie and when I came through no one had to come tell me what the expectations were, my teammates put those expectations on me.", said Coach Sims. "We don't walk around talking about our expectations here it's already expected. The community expects it and they expect it of themselves."
This year's senior class wants their final season to go above and beyond whats expected of them.
"They've got a high expectation for us and we just want to be above that. We want to produce and play to our expectations, our teams expectations, an our coaches expectations. Not what the state has for us.", said senior linebacker Isaiah Dartar.
Senior quarterback Luke Latimer believes this year's squad can go far. As long as they don't beat themselves.
"Our focus is to create turnovers from the other team and limit our turnovers. We have to finish in the red zone and finish our drives. Overall, we have to play better together as a team and don't create turnovers for ourselves.", said Latimer.
Even after posting twelve wins last season, Coach Sims knows there is still room for improvement.
"We were pleased with last year, going to the quarterfinals and winning twelve ball games was good for us. We want to get better though. We have high expectations but we just want to win that first football game is all we care about.", said Coach Sims. "We're going to have to get in shape and learn the offense and defense and execute. We're going to have to take care of the football and learn how to take the football away and just focus on doing our jobs."
Childress will open their 2018 season on the road in a tough match up against the Bushland Falcons.
