AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The Texas Panhandle War Memorial will be the new home of a significant historical artifact.
An 800 pound portion of the USS Arizona will be shipped from Hawaii to Amarillo to be enshrined at the memorial grounds.
UPS has donated the costs of shipping the artifact and will take charge of it on the 3,600 mile journey.
The USS Arizona was sunk by Japanese bombers during the attack on Pearl Harbor, killing 1,177 officers and crewmen aboard.
The piece being sent to Amarillo was removed by workers during construction of a memorial over the sunken bow of the ship.
Shipping will begin in Hawaii on June 21.
Delivery of the artifact should be completed by June 30.
