UPDATE: Xcel Energy spokesperson Wes Reeves says power has been restored to the affected areas in Canyon.
An equipment malfunction is blamed for the short outage, and crews continue to look into exactly what went wrong.
AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - In an advisory sent to local media, Canyon police say there is no electricity for a large portion of the city.
They're urging drivers to avoid any roadways with traffic lights, as many of them are presumably affected by the outage.
Xcel Energy spokesperson Wes Reeves says around 4,700 customers are affected in Canyon, mostly around the western part of town.
Crews are working now to get power restored, but there is no word at this time exactly how long that might take.
