AMARILLO, TX - Several hundred free downtown parking spots will soon be metered.
Downtown Amarillo Inc. held its monthly "Lunch & Learn" meeting on Thursday to discuss the future of downtown parking.
Executive Director Melissa Dailey said once the new parking garage between Embassy Suites and Xcel Energy opens in the spring of 2017, parking spots will start to be metered. She said it's projected to cost about $2 per hour to park in the garage, and 75 cents to a dollar to park on the street. The idea is to have the people who utilize downtown pay for downtown.
Paid parking is projected to bring in more than $700,000 in annual revenue.
Dailey said these meters will be convenient to use, and will not require people to constantly carry quarters. Smart technology will allow users to pay a meter with their credit card or even using an app on their phones.
If you need more time at a meter, you can simply add time using your phone instead of having to run outside and physically put in more money.
Dailey said she does not believe paid parking will stop people from coming downtown. She hopes the new downtown environment will draw people to restaurants and entertainment regardless of whether parking is free.
But while construction is going on downtown, there are several free parking lots available for public use.
