Man drowns at Lake Meredith, body recovered
A 21 year old male from Amarillo was swimming at Spring Canyon at Lake Meredith when he didn't come back up.
Officials got a 911 call around 11:20. It took the Amarillo Police Department's dive team about an hour to recover the body.
They found the body about 75 to 85 feet away from the shore at around 1:50, he was pronounced dead at 1:55.
About five different agencies were on the scene to recover the body.
"We started our search and rescue and we developed what we call a grid search. Crews get in a long line and start searching up and down the row" says Robert Maguire, Superintendent of Lake Meredith.
The Amarillo Police Department, Hutchinson County Sheriff, and National Park Service all assisted in the search and recovery.
Visibility was an issue because the water was so murky.
"There is so much sand on the bottom of this lake that you can't even see your hand in front of your face when you are under water that is how murky it is" says Hutchinson County Sheriff Don Johnson.
However, it was not until the APD dive team arrived that they were able to find the body.
The small area that makes up Spring Canyon helped with the search.
"The deeper and the wider you have to search the area, the longer it can take. This size allows the search to go faster" says Robert Maguire,Superintendent of Lake Meredith.
The body is being sent to Lubbock for an autopsy
