New Mexico boy, 12, to be sentenced for school shooting

Roswell, N.M. - A 12-year-old boy who pleaded no contest to opening fire in a New Mexico middle school gym and injuring two students will be sentenced today.

The boy will appear in court for the Jan. 14 shooting at a middle school in Roswell. As a juvenile, he faces the possibility of detention until he is 21 years old.

A defense memo says the boy is socially and emotionally immature, was chronically bullied, and regrets his actions.

The boy's lawyers request he be placed in treatment for two years and then released if doctors decide he is no longer a threat.

The boy was charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of carrying a firearm on school premises.
