AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - After the largest wildfires in Texas history broke out across the Panhandle earlier this year, two companies are coming together to quickly alert first responders when one sparks.

Xcel Energy has partnered with Pano AI to place AI-driven cameras across 11 Texas Panhandle counties.

These ultra resolution cameras will use artificial intelligence to detect smoke and heat signatures to quickly alert firefighters.

“Today we announced with Pano AI that we will be deploying 50 cameras in the SPS service territory. These cameras will be evaluating the landscape for early detection and warning of any wildfires that may happen to start in the area,” said Adrian Rodriguez, president at Southwestern Public Service Company.

The technology behind these cameras will be able to use full 360-degree, 10 mile-zoom capability along with thermal and smoke detection.

“Notified of fire ignitions quickly, also use situational awareness to be able to zoom in and understand exactly the nature of these incidents, and then be able to apply initial attack and multi-agency response with a goal toward keeping these incidents smaller,” said Arvind Satyam, co-founder and chief commercial officer for Pano AI.

Xcel plans to install 125 cameras within the next five years, starting with four by the end of this year, followed by 50 installations in 2025.
