AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - When organizations work hard for good causes, they sometimes attract unexpected good deeds that benefit themselves.

That’s exactly what happened recently as a business in Amarillo seized an opportunity to bless a local non-profit organization.

You may not think that a single homeless dog could matter much in our area. But this was Gracie.

“She had some puppies she was going to be euthanized at Childress, so they took her in as a foster. And after her puppies were old enough to be adopted. She was taken in to be spayed and she passed away in honor of Gracie. That’s how this project started,” said Cheryly Goswick, Gracie’s Project Volunteer.

Gracie’s project is devoted to finding homes for dogs and especially saving them from being put down at pounds and shelters.

“They keep them as long as they can, but they fill up and they have to have the dogs would be euthanized. And that’s what we’re working hard to try to stop,” said Cheryl.

Dealing with so many dogs the project needed a way to mass transport a large number of animals due to different scenarios and was able to obtain a U.S. school bus.

Well what the plan the original plan for it was for emergencies, as dry as it is, and the wildfires we’re gonna try to use it for some adoption event.

The bus however needed work especially the installation of heat and air to keep the dogs safely comfortable.

“Having that AC in there makes all the difference if we do we have an emergency you know we can’t just put 60 dogs in here because that jacks up the heat really quickly,” said Cheryl.

The bus was dropped off at Rodfather’s for the air conditioner installation.

“Took it to Ronfather’s they said ‘Hey, we’ve got some AC units from a camper that are RV that we had done some work on so bring it in.’ So they went and dropped it off and they kept it you know they did it when they had to,” said Cheryl.

Upon arriving to pick up the bus when the work was complete. However, yes, there was a little surprised when he came to pick up the bus not only had they installed the air conditioning equipment and done the repairs, but they’re also decked out the bus with Gracie’s Project decals all free of charge.

“We brought it in they wanted to put an air conditioner on it and and we surprised them put two AC’s on it. And while we had it here, my wife, she’s a real big fan of Gracie’s Project she loves to donate to him all the time and so, I call my friends over at Auto Trim Design and had him make me up some decals for the sides of it. We put those on just to kind of make the bus what it is help for. For Gracie’s. We enjoy helping those out, all the money goes to the to the animals and stuff like that. So, it’s we enjoy doing that,” said Michael Lewis, Rodfather’s Owner and Gracie’s Project Supporter.

It’s a great blessing. They did a lot of work, lots of man hours and it was all donated and you just don’t get any better than that.

A great example of community love and support.

Blessing an organization that goes out of their way to bless others.

Now that’s some good news.

What do puppies and a school bus have in common? It’s my Good News story tonight.
