GRUVER, Texas (KFDA) - This week’s FirstBank Southwest GOAT Scholar Athlete of the Week is a senior that is going back to the UIL 2A State Tournament after Gruver fell short last season and injuries kept her on the bench. Meet Camryn Armes.

Gruver 5′7″ senior Armes is no stranger to the State Tournament. Her sharpshooting from behind the arc earned 2020 2A State MVP honors.

“I think we just had that like feeling and that end goal of San Antonio. That’s where we wanted to be,” said Armes. “That’s where we were going to be and I knew I had to step up because Bailey was being face guarded that whole game.”

Armes’ high IQ on and off the court makes her tough to stop. She holds a 3.9 GPA and participates in National Honor Society and United Methodist youth group.

“She’s in range when she gets in the gym,” said Trent Lankford, Gruver girls basketball head coach. “Sometimes it’s in the parking lot, but she has that DNA about her where she plays big when the lights are the brightest.”

During Gruver’s State playoff run that season, Armes knew something was wrong.

“I couldn’t move side to side or go fast enough, and it was just like constant pain,” said Armes.

She found out she was born with hip dysplasia and needed surgery.

“Where your hip bone in the socket is not fully in there properly, so it’s just rubbing against each other and I didn’t have my full motion,” said Armes.

“It was really hard for her,” said Callie Conyers, Gruver senior post. “It was hard for us too not having her on the court with us, but we tried to bring love and show her the encouragement she needed. She did the same for us.”

Support from Gruver gave Armes the strength to get back on the court and now the senior captain has a chance to play for another State Championship.

“It’s taught me that if you believe in yourself you can fight through anything really,” said Conyers. “She’s proving it every day in practice and every opportunity she gets to play.

“Made me really miss basketball,” said Armes. “Made me really realize how much love I have for the game and it just pushed me to become a better player and be a better teammate for my teammates.”
