AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Amarillo High Lady Sandies (6-1) have claimed the District 3-5A lead with an 8-5 win over the Randall Raiders (5-2) on Tuesday at Randall High.
Amarillo High got off to an early start with a first inning run, but then both teams hit a dry spell until the fourth inning. That’s when Randall’s Maliya Martinez hit a 2-run homer deep to left centerfield for the 2-1 go-ahead lead. From there it was a back and forth battle. Top of the fifth, Amarillo sophomore Kylee Lansbury answered with a solo dinger of her own to left field, tying it up at 2-all.
“It meant a lot. I was really happy to help them out,” said Lansbury. “We were helping each other out and cheering each other on.”
The Lady Sandies added to their lead a few batters later. Danae Lopez hit a liner past third that would have earned her a single, but a three-base error brought home Paris Fox and Lopez for the 4-2 lead.
Raiders respond right back. Lauren Garcia hit an RBI double to left field closing the gap to one. Moments later, fielder’s choice got the easy out at second, but Garcia was sent home thanks to Leah Garcia. With the game tied at 4-a-piece, Randall pitcher Jacelyn Cornwell found a gap to the outfield for the go-ahead 5-4 lead.
The Lady Sandies defense held firm after that run. Amarillo High’s Lansbury would have another strong at bat for a 2 RBI double, elevating the Lady Sandies to a 6-5 lead. Tessia Guzman brought home Lansbury, extending their lead 7-5 in the top of the sixth inning. Amarillo added another run in the seventh for the final score, 8-5.
“We’ve been pushing effort, effort, effort and execution all year long. We struggled early on,” said Amarillo High Head Coach Ty Hoobler. “Saw some tough opponents, but we told them to keep their heads up and giving full out effort and they did. It was an all around effort today.”
