AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - On Jan. 5 2021 former Amarillo Sandie Max Maxfield earned the Blair Cherry Memorial Award.

The other nominee’s were Palo Duro’s Chris Thorton, Will Baxter from Tascosa High School, and Fabian Morales out of Caprock High School. The nominee’s were chosen because of their work ethic on and off of the football field.

Maxfield was among the outstanding athlete’s nominated for the award, in addition to winning he also received a city proclamation declaring Jan. 5 of every year “Max Maxfield Day.”

“I can kind of hang my hat on that,” said Maxfield. “You know I got a day named after me now, it feels great.”

Maxfield expressed that it was a great honor to him to be on the same list as some players he grew up admiring.

“Seeing some of those guys that really put a goal up where i wanted to be and where I wanted to strive to get to,” said Maxfield. “It feels good that I’m on that list now.”
