AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Amarillo Fire Department wants to remind residents of the importance of property maintenance in order to prevent fire risks after a fire this afternoon.

Around 1:47 p.m., crews were called to a grass fire near Hinsey Drive and Withers Avenue.

Crews arrived to find fire around two homes. People in one of the homes were unable to escape due to high heat and smoke surrounded the home.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire so the people could escape from the home.

Another resident from the other home was evaluated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was considered under control a little after 2:00 p.m.

One vehicle and several outbuildings were damaged in the fire.

The Amarillo Fire Department is reminding residents of the importance of property maintenance. Keeping your grass cut low and removing debris from your property can be the difference in whether or not your homes and property are saved.

AFD also recommends watering any grass or trees in the immediate area of your home.
