AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Amarillo Fire Department asks citizens to be aware of people unlawfully staying in vacant homes during winter after a two-alarm fire that happened this morning.

At around 9:25 a.m., dispatch received a call about a possible structure fire on South Austin Street.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the attic of a single-story home.

The fire was under control by 10:09 a.m., and the Amarillo Fire Marshal’s Office determined the cause to be accidental.

Damage to the vacant property was estimated at $80,000, and AFD crews were able to protect nearby homes.

There were no injuries reported.

AFD asks that citizens be aware of and report people unlawfully staying in vacant homes and buildings during the winter, as it brings a potential for warming fires.

There are numerous organizations throughout Amarillo that offer safe and warm shelters for those in need.
