AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Amarillo police continue to investigate a fatal on I-40 east near South Lakeside Drive that left one dead and another behind bars.

According to APD, about 8:16 p.m. on Tuesday, the driver was headed eastbound on I-40.

The police said they got off the highway and then tried to get back on, causing the car to flip.

The passenger, a 31-year-old Ashley Renee Hernandez, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 38-year-old Ricardo Alfonzo Sanchez, was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Police say he is being booked into the Potter County jail for intoxicated manslaughter.

Police believe the use of marijuana, speed and no seat belt are factors in the crash.

The APD’s Traffic Investigation Squad is investigating the crash.
