AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - It seems that every week we hear about a new business opening, and this week is no different.
Three of the newest businesses opening in Amarillo include a Gulf Coast/Cajun restaurant, the Tex-Mex chain Chuy’s and Chicken Express is expanding to the south of Amarillo.
This week we ventured out to the newest Cajun restaurant on Fillmore Street and 10th avenue.
Sunday’s Kitchen has been open for five weeks and already has recommendations from people all around Amarillo.
“The idea and name of Sunday’s Kitchen was birthed on Sunday mornings," said Sunday’s Kitchen Owner Ronnie Granger. "My parents would always cook before church and the smell that went through the house, we would just be in church thinking about that meal all day long. So, I took that name and brought it here.”
Sunday’s Kitchen offers a variety of food that isn’t just Cajun like West Texas cheese steak, pulled pork grilled cheese and a Tex-Mex rice bowl.
“I am traditionally a Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Cajun cook but because I’ve come to West Texas and have fallen in the love with the food here, I’ve picked up West Texas cooking style,” says Granger.
On the south side of town, Chicken Express will be expanding to 4104 Bell street next door to Sonic.
“We’re really excited to be able to branch out and be able to help people that are south of town, so that they don’t have to drive as far to get some good chicken,” says Chicken Express store manager Montina Delano.
They plan on breaking ground in the next couple of weeks, depending on weather and from that point, it takes six-months until opening day.
“Were going to break ground in the next couple of weeks, but with all the rain its been a little hard to break ground,” said Delano.
And another restaurant that has been in the works for over year is coming to Amarillo.
Today, we spoke with Chuy’s headquarters in Austin. They plan on making a final decision of the location in Amarillo in March of 2020.
Chuy’s is a Tex-Mex restaurant chain with 102 locations in 19 states.
