AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - A new season of volleyball brings a new head coach for the Palo Duro Dons.
“Its super exciting because volleyball here is very competitive. The fact that I get the opportunity to coach here in Amarillo is awesome," said new hire Anslee Jefferies. "I’m super excited to help build the PD program.”
Anslee Jefferies is an Amarillo native-a Tascosa graduate that found her way to PD.
“I actually started my teaching career here, so I have been part of the PD family for six years," she explained. "I’ve actually been a Don more than a Rebel.”
Historically, the Lady Dons haven’t lived up to the standard of high school girls volleyball in the Panhandle. Still, Jefferies believes she’s inheriting the group that can turn it around.
“Last year the varsity team was pretty young, they were all mainly sophomores, and so I’m excited because I still have two years with them. They’re really go-getters,” she gushed.
This season, she’s hoping to build off the early start that the several sophomores got playing on the varsity level, and translating a learning experience to believe in themselves.
“I want the girls to come out of it with the confidence that they can compete, and that they are capable of competing at a high level," she said.
All the while, starting to build a program that would make everyone in her hometown proud.
“Sometimes it’s tough playing Tascosa," she joked, “But Palo Duro volleyball is exciting now."
