APD dedicates renovated classroom to former police chief

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Amarillo police dedicated a renovated classroom today to former Police Chief Jerry Neal.

Jerry Neal served as police chief of the Amarillo Police Department from 1981 to 2007. During his tenure, the department grew from 234 officers to 312.

“The foundation for this police department being the professional agency that it is is due to Chief Neal. That is so clear, it is crystal clear to me” said Chief Ed Drain. “He was chief for 26 years - that’s longer than a lot of people’s careers. So, what this man was able to achieve is just astonishing.”

Neal was know for creating the Special Crimes Unit, School Liaison Officer program and the Citizens Police Academy class. He also partnered with the Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center to give children who have been abused a safe environment.

Neal passed away in April of 2018.

*****Correction on the time, the actual ceremony will be from 2-4pm. We apologize for the confusion.**** AMARILLO...
