AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The Mardi Gras Party is one of many ways Family Support Services is able to fund what they do for the community year after year.
The event features live music, Cajun food, a silent auction, and a casino with all proceeds going to a worthy cause.
“It helps support our mission to serve 25,000 people this year in the areas of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking intervention and prevention, emergency housing like our domestic violence shelter, veteran resources,” said Chief Development Officer for FSS Joett Campbell. “We work with at-risk kids and struggling families. A lot of people with a lot of needs.”"
Campbell said 10 years ago the organization had only one large fundraiser at the time and needed one during the winter months.
Mardi Gras just seemed like a perfect connection for a party and there really wasn’t one in Amarillo at the time," she said. “So we’ve continued to be the biggest and the best.”
Hundreds of people packed the Heritage Room in the Amarillo Civic Center this evening to celebrate Mardi Gras and show their support.
“I think it’s great to see the community coming out to support our mission which helps those 25,000 people annually,” said Family Support Services Board Member Ernesto Guzman. “It’s just amazing to see the community come together as a whole.”
“We have to remember it is a non-profit and this non-profit is only as good as it’s donors and the individuals who actually can fund the program that they actually do,” said volunteer for Family Support Services Marcus Nerios. “This fundraiser in itself, the Mardi Gras Party, is one of the best fundraisers that Family Support Services has. And it’s so beneficial, not only for our community, but for the individuals that they actually serve as well.”
The non-profit also encourages and accepts donations from the community year-round.
“Almost everyone you meet knows someone who has received services at Family Support Services,” said Campbell. “With 25,000 people a year, it’s pretty sure you know someone. And we cover services that no one else covers. And without the community’s support, we can’t do what we do.”
