Fire restrictions go into effect tomorrow for the Kiowa and Rita Blanca national grasslands in northeastern New Mexico near Clayton.
Grasslands district ranger Nancy Walls says the Stage 1 restrictions are a necessary precaution because of continued dry, warm and windy weather.
Walls says the restrictions prohibit campfires, charcoal grills and stove fires on national forest lands except in U.S. Forest Service-developed camp and picnic grounds where grills are provided.
Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns and heaters meeting safety specifications are allowed.
Smoking is allowed only in an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area clear of all flammable material for at least 3 feet in diameter.
