Stem Cell Study Approved

It could be a major step forward for stem cell research when a US biotech company begins the first study of its kind.

The federal government has approved the first human clinical trials, using embryonic stems cells.

The Geron Corporation will conduct the tests, choosing eight to 10 paralyzed patients with spinal cord injuries.

Researchers say the main purpose of the trial will be to see whether injecting these cells into patients is safe.

The trials could get under way by this summer.
