A D.P.S. trooper involved in a deadly shooting near Channing Sunday afternoon is placed on standard paid leave today. A D.P.S. spokesman says it is policy for any trooper involved in a shooting to be placed on a 3 day leave.
The shooting happened on US 385 in Channing around two Sunday afternoon when the trooper pulled a vehicle over. A D.P.S. spokesman says the trooper and driver shot at each other, while the passenger fled. The driver was killed and the passenger was found hiding in a nearby abandoned building.
The officer was shot in the leg and suffered only minor injuries. He was treated at a local hospital and was released a short time later.
