Nature Conservancy Buys Ranch Land to Help Lesser Prairie Chicken

The Lesser Prairie Chicken population may receive a boost thanks to a land purchase near Roosevelt County.

The Nature Conservancy, using some government money, bought the 9,170 acre Johnson Ranch.

It borders the current preserve in our area near Milnesand, and is prime habitat for the Lesser Prairie Chicken.

The bird has sat on the endangered species candidate list for more than a decade.

Last month, the US Fish and Wildlife service raised the bird's status on the list to one of the most urgent categories.
