CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AP) - AC-130H gunships will begin moving to eastern New Mexico's Cannon Air Force Base in June.
A spokesman for the 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Air Field in Florida, 2nd Lt. Mark Lazane, says the 16th Special Operations Squadron will finish moving from Hurlburt to Cannon in August.
He says about 300 people will transfer to Cannon.
A 2007 Air Force Special Operations Command fact sheet says the Air Force has eight active AC-130H aircraft, known as the Spectre. They are armed with 40 mm and 105 mm cannons.
Lazane says the aircraft is extremely useful in providing close air support for personnel on the ground.
