Rep. Smithee Talks About Running for Speaker

Amarillo Representative John Smithee is back in the Panhandle, after spending the weekend trying to run for Texas Speaker of the House.

Today Smithee shed light on his 24-hour candidacy.

He says he was asked by current speaker Tom Craddick to carry on the torch for rural Texas speakers.

But Smithee says time has run out, and urban representatives wanted an urban Speaker of The House.

So Smithee decided to do what was best for the Republican party.

"It was very unlikely we were going to be successful and at one point you're not doing any good, you're causing more division than you are at getting any benefit at that point," said Rep. Smithee.

Representative Joe Straus of San Antonio is the preemptive next Speaker of The House.

The legislature convenes in one week.
