Texas Speaker of the House Position Wide-Open

The race for the speaker of the house in Texas is heating up.

Representative Tom Craddick from Midland has been Speaker since 2003.

But last night a group known as the Anything-But-Craddick or ABC republicans selected Representative Joe Straus of San Antonio.

He has already recieved public support from 11 republicans.

Who hold a 76-74 majority in the house.

But the narrow partisan split means house democrats will determine who is elected as the next speaker of the house.

Representative John Smithee of Amarillo has had his name mentioned for the speaker potions, but still has not officially declared to run.
