Rabies vaccines to be air dropped across Texas

AUSTIN (AP) _ Nearly 3 million rabies vaccines baits will be air dropped over some 41 Texas counties next month.

State health officials said Monday the drops are intended to help stem the spread of rabies among South Texas coyotes and gray foxes in West Texas. Some of the baits are made from dog food and molasses.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said no human cases of rabies have occurred in areas targeted by the drops since the program began in 1995.

According to state officials, cases of canine rabies has declined from a high of 142 in 1995 to none through October.

Reported cases of gray fox rabies are down to 11 through the same period.
