Crime Tips Can Now Be Emailed and Text Messaged

Fighting crime in our area just became easier thanks to technology. Tips can now be emailed and text messaged in to authorities.

First up, email. Go to the Crime Stoppers website, and click on the "submit a tip by email" link.

For text messaging, text ACS plus your tip to CRIMES, or 274637.

And as with call-in tips, you will remain anonymous.

But it does not just stop at words on a page. Corporal Sean Slover says, "they can send photographs. We had one earlier this week and got a search warrant because of the email."

The new way to tip off police has caught the eye of Student Crime Stoppers as well, and they are hoping to get in on it.

Amarillo High School student Carly Thornton says, "most kids now text and don't call or anything so we'd rather not have anyone see us."

Thornton says student crime stoppers gives out thousands of dollars a month in rewards, and get tips on anything from stealing to having drugs in a locker.

Cpl. Slover says tipsters can also email and text back and forth with police, so if an investigator is out in the field, he or she can get more information.
