New Lights Can Save You Money This Holiday Season

A new trend in christmas decorations could save you over 75 percent on your electricity bill.

Despite being more expensive, and in some cases not as bright compared to standard incandescent bulbs, LED lights can be a smart choice for decorating your home this holiday season.

A recent study by consumer reports found LED's are more durable, energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

For just one strand of lights they can save you up to eleven dollars on your electricity bill.

And if you are to decorate your entire house with LED's you could see some big savings.

"They last longer so if you make an investment in LED lights this year within two or three years they'll probably pay for themselves. Through lower electric costs. Which can be as much as 80% less to operate than incandescent lights," said Wes Reeves, a spokesman for Xcel Energy.

One lighting expert told me incandescent lights usually run for about 1,500 hours.

Where as LED's can run for 35 thousand hours.... That's four years straight.

Here's a breakdown of the numbers.

For 50 feet of stringing and 300 hours of running the lights.

Mini-size:

100 Incandescent bulbs on two strings will cost $1.30 to operate.

140 LED bulbs on two strings will cost 30 cents to operate.

C7 Size:

50 Incandescent blubs on two strings will cost $8 to operate.

75 LED bulbs on three strands will cost 14 cents to operate.

C9 size:

50 Incandescent bulbs on two strings will cost $11 to operate.

75 LED bulbs on three strands will cost 14 cents to operate.

These numbers are based off of the national average of about 11 cents per kilowatt hour.

So actual prices in the Panhandle will be lower, because the average price per kilowatt in the Panahandle is about 9.4 cents.
