TAKS Requirements May Change

Your third grader may not have to pass the TAKS test to be promoted to the next grade...that is if a proposal by Texas lawmakers goes through in the next legislative session.

The changes include the state not requiring students in third, fifth, and eighth grades to pass the state achievement test to get to the next grade. Instead, that promotion would be up to individual districts.

Another change would be grading a school's performance over the course of three years instead of every year...a change welcomed by school districts.

The Texas legislature reconvenes next February when it will review the proposal and possibly draw up a bill.
