Study Says Downtown Needs Hotel

Amarillo is officially ready and equipped to handle a full service hotel downtown, according to a recent study.

Researchers talked with existing hotel owners, meeting planners and Civic Center officials. They found that Amarillo is missing a certain type of hotel...the type that would mean big business for the Civic Center. Rob Hunden's company spearheaded the research study. "The existing hotels that are along the highways and things like that, they are either older full service hotels or newer limited service hotels, so you don't have one hotel that has the right location, the right amenities and the right quality."

The plan to expand downtown's skyline was introduced at Tuesday's City Commission work session. There is already one downtown hotel in the works. The Fisk building on Polk Street is already approved for development by Marriott.
