Escaped Inmate Caught!

An escaped Curry County inmate is in the Randall County Jail.

The Amarillo Police Department caught the fifth of eight escapees from the New Mexico Curry County Detention center.

Nineteen-year-old Larry McClendon is behind bars at the Randall County Correction Center.

This morning the Amarillo PD SWAT team was tipped off that a jail escapee may be in staying in an Amarillo apartment complex at 4710 West 57th.

Deputies began watching the location around eleven and spotted McClendon walking through the courtyard of the complex.

When SWAT officers tried to capture him, he began a foot chase that ended in the parking lot of the Ashley Furniture store.

Randall Co. Sheriff's PIO Danny Alexander says,"It's comforting to know that he's in custody but he's been among us for quite sometime and I think there are a couple more still out. We don't know where they are."

The Curry County Correction center has been notified of McClendon's capture. He will be in solitary confinement at the Randall County Correction Center until an extradition hearing is held at the beginning of the week.  McClendon can waive extradition and be returned to Clovis but if he does not, District Attorney Matt Chandler says his office will try to get a governor's warrant to take him to New Mexico.  That could take up to two months.

McClendon is facing outstanding warrants for escape and homicide charges.

He had been missing since late August when he and seven others escaped through the roof of the Curry County Jail.
