Interstate Shut Down For Fatal Accident Investigation

In an unusual move by authorities, I-27 is shut down Thursday in hopes to find out who is responsible for the death of an 18-year-old girl.

Department of Public Safety officers are hoping skid marks on the road will give them more insight into the accident.

It happened early Monday morning when the 18-year-old woman's car swerved off the northbound lanes into a ditch and then into oncoming traffic traveling south.

Anytime there is a fatality as a result of an accident, authorities investigate.

Because evidence was scattered across the road in this crash, they had to close down all the southbound lanes...something that has not been done in quite some time.

One DPS Trooper we spoke with says in his five years working for the department, they have never shut down all lanes on a road.

The road was closed from 9:30 Thursday morning until about noon.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
