Downtown Crime Rate Going Down

Sgt. Brent Barbee, APD Sgt. Brent Barbee, APD

More people are moving downtown everyday, and with more people comes increased safety concerns. Parkview Apartments, on South Fillmore, opened this morning.

One way to alleviate some safety concerns residents say they have is by the developer installing security gates. Along with more residents moving to the area, is a growing homeless population. Amarillo Police say people have the misconception that because the homeless are visible, it's an unsafe place to live, but it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Sgt. Brent Barbee says "I just looked at the police report and there's been no crimes in the past few weeks. None at all. Not even any burglaries or attempted robberies."

Police say there are some safety measures you can take whether you live in Parkview apartments or any apartment across town. You should never leave your car unlocked in the parking lot and most importantly, never leave your front door unlocked, even if just for a few minutes while running out to your car quickly.
