Police To Change Downtown Efforts

Amarillo Police could be changing the way they patrol downtown. It's all due to the increasingly large number of residents moving in.

APD has been talking about boosting security downtown for a while now, but with the recent addition of Parkview, they say it could soon become more than just talk. Police have been talking for several months now about implementing tactics used in places like Dallas and Houston. APD Sgt. Brent Barbee says  "policing tactics that belong in bigger cities. It could be walking, or maybe putting police on bicyles. Whatever it takes to get them closer to the people."

Barbee says these changes won't happen overnight and nothing is set in stone, but those options are strong possibilities. Don't let the increased security talk scare you... Police say these possible changes are not spurred by recent crime sprees. In fact, police reports show no crime at all in downtown over the past few weeks. In fact, the growing number of apartments and businesses play a key role in those diminishing crime rates.
