Coffee Memorial in Need of Blood

Even though Ike is not predicted to hit the coast until saturday, blood supplies are already low and will be in high demand once the storm makes landfall.

Blood donated today won't be able to help out any storm victims for at least 24 to 48 hours... It has to be tested and put through machines before it can be put into anyone else. For that reason, Coffee Memorial Blood Center is asking for people to donate today, so it's available when storm victims need it. While all blood types are important, there's two in particular that are in extremely low supply.

Jim Rutledge at the Blood Center says "we have a color coded system when we're talking about blood levels. When you look at it everything is green, which is good, means we have a three day supply. Everything except for 0 positive and 0 negative. Those aren't green. They're not even yellow. It's like a Christmas tree. They're red. Which means we have less than a one day supply of those and we cannot ship blood anywhere else until we have a three day supply. It's just too dangerous."

If you would like to donate blood, the Coffee Memorial Blood Center is open today and tomorrow until 7, Friday from 8 to 5:30 and on Saturday from 8 to 2:30.
