People in Washburn are living with less than the state-required amount of water in their tanks. If a fire were to start, there wouldn't be enough water to put it out.
To fix the problem, community members obtained a loan from Happy State Bank to finance their water expansion project. The total project cost will be funded by a combination of corporation funds, a grant from the Office of Rural Community Affairs and the guaranteed loan from Happy State Bank.
Residents of the community can expect an increase in their water bill, once the project is complete. Jack Hulsey, who has lived in Washburn for more than 45 years, says the benefits outweigh the costs.
"If you have enough water. It will bring people in...and businesses too," said Hulsey.
