AISD Helping At Risk Students

High school dropouts cost Texas taxpayers millions of dollars.... $377 million every year. It's because dropouts have a higher Medicaid usage rate, a higher incarceration rate and contribute less to state income taxes.

AISD is working on creating programs to keep kids in school, hoping to save their futures, and save you money. Daivd Manchee, Amarillo High's Associate Principal, says "kids that are close on their credits but are still kind of behind attendance wise, we can take them to court to court order them to school to help encourage them. We use North Heights where they can make up credits. We're working on creating a GED lab. All the campuses are working on creating that. On average 17% of AISD students drop out ever year. Each one of those dropouts costs about $3200 tax payer dollars.
