What It Takes: The Amarillo Police Academy Episode 5

The tools of the trade... All cops carry them.. A gun... Handcuffs, tasers.. But adjusting to them can be hard for rookies.

The gear is heavy.. The vest and a fully loaded gunbelt weighs about 20 pounds... An adjustment for anyone.

That's why recruits are dawning fakes right now.. Just to get use to the feel.

On top of learning to walk around with extra luggage..

Cadets are also being fitted for hazardous material suits..

Another challenge... Learning how to suit up correctly and protect themselves.

While they are preparing physically for the job..

They have to prepare mentally... Because the first few months away from here class to working here on the streets will also cause them to make adjustments.

Sgt. Strecia McCaig say, "They won't see the sun unless they are getting off. They are either going to our evening shift 3-11, 4-12, or they are going to go to the midnight shift, where they go to work at 11 in the evening and get off at 7 in the morning."

Get in, buckle up, and hold on... Next Monday on What It Takes: The Amarillo Police Academy we are going for a ride.. High speed style!

Get in the car with cadets while they learn to push patrol cars to their limits... We are hitting the gas then slamming on the breaks next week.
