American Airlines waives 3rd bag fee for military

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)  American Airlines today announced it will waive the fee to check a third bag for active members of the U.S. military.

Fort Worth-based American says fees for first and second checked bags have always been waived for active service members.

Previously, military personnel had to pay the $100 fee for the third checked bag -- and then fill out a form to be reimbursed by the military.

The new waiver policy begins immediately by American, which is the nation's largest carrier.

Airlines have been raising fares and imposing new and higher fees for checking luggage to offset soaring fuel costs.
